Metering work and installations during COVID-19 restrictions
As customer visits restart, it’s our top priority to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our customers, colleagues, partners and their staff. We wanted to share with you some of the measures that we’re taking to do this.

For our colleagues
We’ve taken a range of measures to protect our colleagues and you can read the full risk assessment here, and download our certificate here.
As a summary:
- Most of us are working from home and will continue to do so for as long as necessary. We’ll only come in to the office if we can’t perform the task from home.
- When we do return to the office, we’ll ensure appropriate social distancing measures. For example, by staggering breaks, limiting face-to-face meetings and using floor markings.
- We’ll increase the cleaning of all surfaces and high contact points like doors and handles.
- We’ll introduce a queueing system for general facilities, like toilets and kitchen.
Our partners
We work with a range of partners for collecting meter reads, installing smart meters and performing other metering work. We have developed our own risk assessment for this type of work, which you can review here. We will not deploy an engineer until we have confirmed their risk assessment complies with ours. You can read their individual risk assessments at the links below but as a general rule engineers will:
- Maintain social distance guidance.
- Assess the situation once at the property (they may also call you before arrival).
- Ask you to move to a different room or to have open access (e.g. leaving relevant doors open) to perform their job.
- Use sanitising wipes thoroughly before and after they complete work as well as on all tools and equipment used.
- Regularly wipe handles, controls and steering wheels on vehicles.
- Avoid touching their face and use PPE when social distancing is not possible.
- Ask customers to use their own pen to sign any paperwork needed. The engineer will either safely hand the paperwork to you or may sign on your behalf.
- If they generate any waste on the job, it will be double bagged and disposed of securely.
