Non-energy costs for large businesses

Your contract covers two types of costs: your energy costs which we fix at the beginning of your contract and non-energy costs, which are variable and outside of our control. These are referred to as ‘pass-through amounts’.

Charge What is it? Where does it go?
TNUoS Transmission Network Use of System charges - This covers the cost of using the transmission network (the high voltage national system which transmits electricity from power stations to your local Distribution Network). National Grid
DUoS Distribution Use of System charges - This cover the cost of using the distribution network (the local network of cabling which transmits power from its point of arrival from the Transmission Network to your meter). One of the 6 Distribution Network Operators depending on the area of the country in which your meter is located (Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution, Scottish Power Energy Networks, Northern Powergrid, Electricity Northwest, Western Power Distribution and UK Power Networks).
FIT Feed-in Tariff - This is a levy imposed on suppliers to support the Feed-in Tariff scheme. This subsidises small renewable generators such as solar panels on domestic roofs. Generators who have been granted accreditation by Ofgem
RO Renewables Obligation - This is a levy imposed on suppliers to support the Renewables Obligation scheme. This subsidy supports large scale renewable generation such as large wind farms. It is closed to new applications but continues to support existing generators. Generators who have been granted accreditation by Ofgem
CFD FIT Electricity Market Reform – Contracts for Difference - This is a levy imposed on suppliers to support the Contracts for Difference scheme. This subsidy supports large scale renewable generation such large wind farms. It was recently introduced as a successor to the RO. Generators who have been awarded a contract with the government body created to oversee the CFD scheme.
