Renewable energy straight from the zoo

Where does your renewable energy come from? Does a zoo power you? If you are an Opus Energy customer then there is a chance the answer is yes. That’s because the Hamerton Zoo Park in Cambridgeshire is just one of over 1300 independent renewable and solar generator owners we buy from.
Hamerton Zoo Park is the most energy saving zoo in Europe thanks to onsite wind power, solar power, and biomass boilers. Andrew Swales, Director of Hamerton Zoo Park, explains, “We are focused on providing a sustainable environment for our staff, visitors and animals, so we’re always looking to improve our energy efficiency. We’re proud to be the most environmentally-friendly zoo in Europe and needed to work with a supplier to help us meet our latest renewable energy needs to ensure this status was maintained.”
When the team at Hamerton Zoo realised they were generating more energy than they needed, they contacted us to see if we’d be interested in buying the excess. The answer was a resounding “Yes”. Our Renewable Energy team liaised with the zoo staff throughout the set-up process and continues to check in with them on a regular basis.
Andrew Swales has been thrilled with the support saying: “We heard about Opus Energy through recommendations from an installer and manufacturer. We had experienced poor customer service from our previous supplier so were looking for someone with a wealth of experience in the sector who was able to provide good, reliable support - and we’ve not been disappointed.”
Many of Opus Energy’s generators, like Hamerton Zoo Park, are small and medium sized businesses that have identified onsite generation as a possible additional revenue stream, but certainly aren’t experts in the field. By choosing Opus Energy, they can count on us to support them through the entire process, from set-up through to the monthly payments.
We see the work that our Renewable Energy team does as a win/win for everyone. We are able to help small generators turn their excess power into money for them and we get to provide locally-sourced renewable energy to our customers at a competitive price.
