Opus Energy announces 100% renewable electricity in 2020 Fuel Mix Disclosure

8th October 2020

Opus Energy is proud to announce that our Fuel Mix Disclosure for the reporting period April 2019 to March 2020 is 100% renewable.

This is the third consecutive year that our electricity is 100% renewable, and we’re proud to be able to support businesses across the UK to reduce their environmental impact.

This is also the third year in row where our electricity supply has been independently verified by EcoAct - so you can be confident that our electricity is renewable.

Our latest Fuel Mix Disclosure follows on from our announcement earlier this year that we’re now providing 100% renewable electricity as standard to all of our customers, at no extra cost. On average, most UK suppliers have just 38% renewable electricity in their electricity supply.

We’re particularly proud of our renewable credentials this year, as businesses across the country have become more environmentally aware than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before becoming 100% renewable as standard, we supplied, on average, over 90% renewable energy to our customers in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. And as part of Drax, the UK’s largest provider of renewable electricity, we’re committed to ensuring a lower cost, zero carbon energy future.

More than 370,000 businesses premises across all over the country are powering their businesses using zero carbon electricity, saving more than one million tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere*.

Our electricity sources: a breakdown

When energy is generated by a renewable source, such as a wind turbine or solar panel, the generators are provided with a government certificate for each unit of electricity produced. These certificates - called Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) or Guarantees of Origin (GOOs) - demonstrate the electricity comes from a renewable source.

When we buy renewable power from any of the 2300 independent generators we work with, these certificates are passed to us as proof that the power we’ve supplied to our customers comes from sustainable, renewable, zero-carbon sources.
